MEMS devices to generate mobile revenues exceeding $6bn annually by 2016

CBR Staff Writer Published 23 February 2012

The total number of MEMS microphones present in mobile devices shipped will exceed 2bn in 2016, says Juniper Research

Annual revenues generated by MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) devices built into mobile phones including sensors, audio, displays and RF will exceed $6bn by 2016, as the mobile device market grows exponentially, according to a new report from Juniper Research.

Three different categories contributing to the revenues opportunity from MEMS devices are those already deployed (accelerometers, magnetometers & gyroscopes), those currently in initial stages of deployment (displays, RF devices, pressure sensors & microphones) and future applications, including joysticks, temperature and humidity sensors, speakers & pico-projectors, the research firm avers.

Inertial sensor adoption has mainly depended on advanced availability and capability of gaming and navigation applications, which has resulted in them becoming a feature in all mobile devices, particularly in smartphones and tablets, according to the report.
Steady growth of mobile device shipments is also driving MEMS sensors forward, Juniper Research states.

The MEMS in Mobile report author Nitin Bhas says it is worth noting that MEMS sensors are expected to become an important differentiator for mobile device manufacturers towards enabling different capabilities and functionalities, including location based and navigation services.

The report adds that the total number of MEMS microphones present in mobile devices shipped will exceed 2bn in 2016, as device vendors are expected to carve a niche for themselves with high-quality audio input and to integrate multiple microphones.
