AMD launches Opteron 6200 and 4200 Series processors

Formerly code-named as "Interlagos" for 6200 series and "Valencia" for the 4200 series

Semiconductor firm AMD has launch its Opteron 6200 and 4200 Series processors that the company says are scalable from 4- to 16 cores.

The new AMD Opteron processors are formerly code-named as "Interlagos" for 6200 series and "Valencia" for the 4200 series.

The company claims that the new processors provide up to 84% higher performance to businesses, and increased scalability for virtualisation with up to 73% more memory bandwidth.

The new processors consume as low as 4.375W per core, provides up to 24% to 84% better performance on key cloud, virtualisation and HPC workloads

The new Opteron processors feature up to 4 memory channels with up to 1600 MHz memory, and support up to 12 DIMMs per CPU for up to 384GB memory per CPU.

AMD has also unveiled plans to add its 3000 Series platform in its 2012 roadmap, under which the first processor will be the 4-8 core CPU code-named "Zurich", expected to ship in the first half of 2012.
